Use this guide if you are not able to activate Verizon 3G Wireless or need to reset a previously activated 3G modem.

Note: These steps must be completed within Chrome OS, not another operating system.

Before starting, you should try the Google Internet connection troubleshooting guide.

Before you begin

  1. Start your Cr-48 and sign in to Chrome OS

  2. Press ctrl + alt + t to bring up a crosh prompt

  3. Type modem status and press enter

  4. The computer should respond with a page of information. You will need three numbers from this page:

    • min (this will be in the form of a phone number such as 3105551212)
    • mdn (this will also be in the form of a phone number)
    • meid (this will be a 14-digit code starting with the letter 'A'). This code can also be found under the Cr-48 battery
  5. If you contacted Verizon Wireless previously, when you call you will need to provide your security code or the name of your first pet

Change ownership or "reset" the Verizon 3G account on a previously activated Cr-48

If you have a Cr-48 with a 3G account activated by the previous owner, this account will need to be deactivated before you can activate your own account.

  1. Ask the previous owner to call Verizon Mobile Broadband support at (800) 766-8419 and take the following steps:

    • Press # to skip the phone number section
    • Press 2 to select "no contract"
    • Wait for a customer service representative
    • Give them the meid of the Cr-48 (found in the process above as well as under the battery). DO NOT provide the min or mdn numbers -- deactivating these will not remove the account from the device.
    • Ask them to deactivate the account
  2. Now you can go to the network icon on the bottom right of the screen (top right on Chrome OS versions prior to 20)

  3. Select "Activate Verizon Wireless"

  4. You should be presented with a screen to select a plan, or the free 100MB per month for 2 years
