3G in Windows 8


Follow this guide to use the Gobi 2000 3G hardware under Windows 8. This process differs slightly from the guide for Windows 7 both in instructions and in the files used.

  1. Download and install the Qualcomm Gobi 2000 Lenovo installer for Windows available here

  2. Download and unzip the Gobi 2000 Cr-48 Windows 8 installation package available here

  3. Move the QUALCOMM folder from the Gobi 2000 Cr-48 installation package to C:\ProgramData\ (it may be necessary to boot into Safe Mode to overwrite the existing files)

  4. Right-click Computer, select Properties, then Device Manager to find Gobi 2000 under "Other devices"

  5. Right-click the Gobi 2000 icon in the Device Manager and select "Update Driver Software"

  6. Install the drivers located in the installation package in the folder entitled cr48-modified (be sure to check the "Include subfolders" box)

  7. Move the contents of the folder entitled firmware to C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Images\Lenovo\1 (overwrite the existing files)

  8. Press the Search key + R and type "regedit" to launch Registry Editor.

  9. In the Registry Editor, go to: HKey Local Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\VID_1410&PID_A014\DeviceParameters\ and then right-click, select New -> String Value. Enter "PortName", press enter. Then right-click on PortName, select Modify, and enter "COM3" in the Value Data field. Close the Registry Editor.

  10. Open the Release folder in the installation package and run GobiLoader.exeUse the Device Manager to scan for hardware changes

  11. Windows will find new hardware automatically and install the remaining devices necessary to run the 3G modem.

  12. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center and select "Set up a new connection or network"

  13. Select "Set up a dial-up connection"

  14. Enter #777 as the number, name the connection "Verizon 3G" and click Connect

  15. If you get a message that the "modem cannot be found," try running gobiloader.exe again.
